Warning: Nominal Christian

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Last time, I mentioned how dangerous a nominal Christian is. This log would explain that idea. A nominal Christian is a Christian by name only; not a true Christian in terms of attitude and spirit. It is someone who can do "lip service" as in just saying the words and going through the motions of worship but missing the most important part — the heart.

Christian, if you are in a relationship with someone that fits the description; it is better for you to cease the relationship at the earliest. You may be thinking "that’s just extreme" well, sin is extreme. Jesus said when your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; now, that’s extreme.

The point I’m making is that getting involved with a nominal Christian is like getting involved with someone who’s worst than a non-believer. In a way, they are worse because they ought to know better than an unbeliever. Their guilt stacks upon them.

Remember Christian, the light has no fellowship with darkness. Consider the following illustration: let’s Imagine that a Christian is like boiling water, a non-believer is likened to cold water and a nominal Christian is like warm water. If we "mix" the Christian with a person with a different "temperature" then would not the Christian have a colder temperature than what he had before?

Of cows and donkeys

We hear preachers say "do not be unequally yoked."  It sounds so redundant yet we do not know what it means. If you’re coming from an agricultural lifestyle, this illustration would make sense but if you are like the millions of people who grew up in the city then you’ll have difficulty understanding it.

Basically, when a farmer plows his field; that is to turn over soil to prepare it for a seed bed, he needs the aid of beasts of burden either a horse, cow or donkey. To make the work faster, a yoke is used. A yoke is awooden frame by which two animals will be joined by the neck. If the yoke is used on horses then that would be a two-horsepower plow, if you will. Now, imagine attaching the yoke on a cow on one side and a donkey on the other. It may look strange now but wait until you try to plow straight with that thing. Likewise, your walk with the Lord will suffer. It will be turbulent and you’ll see yourself fail many times.

So, when the preacher says "Do not be unequally yoked" it will be wise to gauge your relationships.  Christian, be careful. If you are in a relationship with someone who is not even the same level as you; it is wise to stop and contemplate your future. Remember, a nominal Christian is dangerous. They drag the real Christians down while they let the non-beievers drag them down. More on this next time.
